Non-Profit Promotes Engineering for Maine Students
MEPC Aims to Get Kids Excited About Engineering
Bangor, Maine – A group of Maine engineers has joined together to create the Maine Engineering Promotion Council (MEPC), a non-profit group founded to promote Maine Engineer's Week and the engineering profession and the contributions of engineers to their communities and to society as a whole. They also promote the annual E-Week Expo, which is held the week following National Engineers Week at various locations in Maine. As a larger goal, the group aims to promote engineering as a potential career choice for students throughout Maine.
As a first step in their efforts, MEPC developed an integrated marketing campaign. The first element of the resulting plan was a website launched on February 18, 2002. In addition to promoting Maine Engineers Week, the site serves as an engineering information resource center for students, educators, and engineering professionals alike. EngineeringME.com also features profiles of Maine engineers and engineering projects.
The second element of the promotional campaign is a TV spot targeted to Maine children aged 8 to 18. The 30-second spot made its on-air debut on Tuesday, February 19 throughout the state, and featured Maine-educated engineers with "cool" careers, including a Space Walk Instructor from Windham, Maine, and Francis Crowe, the 1906 University of Maine graduate who led construction of the Hoover Dam. Each year it is our goal to update the commercial with new people profiles.
"The website and TV spot should provide great exposure for Maine Engineers Week, and for engineering in general" says Julie Stultz, Chair of MEPC for 2005-2006. "Our goal is to raise the level of understanding of what exactly it is that engineers do, and let the next generation know what a great career engineering can be."
Engineering firms, major corporations, government agencies, and universities throughout Maine have shown their support by sponsoring MEPC's efforts. Sponsors are listed on the website, and will be acknowledged during Maine Engineers Week events. See the list of sponsors.

E-Week 2006
E-Week 2005 was a great success with events like the Banquet Dinner and Expo. This year we expect even greater events and participant turnout.
Our 2006 program is shaping up to be as spectacular as last, starting with our Annual Banquet Dinner in the Bangor Area on Friday evening March 3. Click here for more information about the banquet.
The fantastic dinner event will be followed the next day by the 2006 Expo event at the UMaine Memorial Gymnasium Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 4. At the EXPO, exhibitors will include Maine's top engineering firms, engineering colleges, government agencies and manufacturing firms featuring hands-on activities, demonstrations and interactive exhibits for children and their parents, engineers and educators. Last year's event attracted about 800 people to the University of Southern Maine, Costello Field House. Click here for more information. |
