Bath Iron Works Manufacturing Support Center
As part of their $250 million Land Level
Transfer Facility (LLTF) modernization project,
Bath Iron Works incorporated a new 4-story,
80,000 sq. ft. mixed use multi-duty operations
facility. The Support Center will become
BIWs hub for material distribution,
front line supervision offices, engineering,
planning, and quality assurance services.
Neill
and Gunter provided mechanical system design
for medium pressure steam with hot water
reheat air systems, 200-ton air cooled chiller
and steam to water connections receiving
250 psig yard steam. Standalone cooling
and ventilation units were provided in the
building's telecommunications and electrical
rooms. Major mechanical equipment was carefully
integrated into the building to assure that
ambient sound levels were kept below the
target noise criteria value. The facility
was fully sprinklered with a wet pipe system
including an electrically driven fire pump
and multiple wet standpipes.
Electrical
services included design of a 2500 KVA substation
with 480/277 volt and 208/120 volt power
distribution. Lighting was controlled in
banks with the ability to switch lamps for
multiple lighting level control. Switching
of lighting for large areas was accomplished
with low voltage controllers. Variable frequency
drives were utilized for mechanical equipment
motors. Fire alarm systems was addressable
and cable tray was installed for telecommunications
wiring with multiple closets.
Structural
engineering was based on a steel building
concentrically braced frame founded on the
LLTF concrete deck. An independent bridge
crane support structure was provided to
service the warehouse area. Durable finish
materials were specified to withstand the
harsh environment.
