Sagadahoc
Bridge
With design and construction completed in
less than three years, Maines new
2972-foot Sagadahoc Bridge is carrying coastal
Route 1 traffic between Bath and Woolwich
over the Kennebec River. Maine Department
of Transportation and the surrounding communities
are extremely proud of this landmark engineering
structure, which includes the longest balanced
cantilever, precast segmental concrete span
in the United States - 420 feet (128 m).
There were numerous innovations in the development
of this $47 million dollar project, including:
MaineDOTs first use of the Design-Build
method of contracting,
A compressed timeframe, allowing Maine to safeguard $38 million Federal dollars,
Extensive citizen and municipal involvement,
Proposal selection based on Best
Value, and
Significant emphasis on aesthetics
and community preferences.
The
end result is a perfect blend of functionality
and elegance - a balance that engineers
strive for every day as we seek to provide
infrastructure that positively impacts the
lives of Maine citizens. The Sagadahoc Bridge
has won several national awards and, more
importantly, will provide quality, cost-effective
service for the next century.
